May be lacking half title. Johannes Pohl was a catholic cleric and ardent Nazi who helped loot Jewish libraries for a projected museum devoted to what he hoped… would be an extinct people, the Jews. He studied Catholic theology in Bonn, was ordained a priest, became a vicar in Essen, received a doctorate in 1929, studied Bible and language at the hotbed of anti-Semites, the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, where he received a second doctorate. Pohl received a scholarship from the Görres Society and went on to further studies at its Oriental Institute in Jerusalem in 1932, where he also worked for the German Association of the Holy Land. In Jerusalem he met his future wife, who was one of the German colonists. Both returned to Germany in 1934. He was a Hebraist at the Prussian State Library, in the Oriental Department, from 1935-1936 and 1939-1941. Pohl, who was dismissed from his clerical post, became an ardent Nazi, wrote reports on "the Jewish question" published by the Institute for the Study of the Jewish Question, and for the anti-Semitic weekly Der Stürmer. He oversaw the destruction of Jewish cultural property in Vilnius, looting the most valuable books and manuscripts from Vilnius' museums and libraries. Then he selected a small fraction for the planned museum in Frankfurt. He sold the rest to a paper mill. He also wrote propaganda for his clients, and published a large number of anti-Semitic writings. Starting the autumn of 1943, Pohl worked for Rosenberg's anti-Semitic magazine Welt-Dienst. After the war ended, Pohl was interned for a year. Starting 1953 he worked for Franz Steiner Verlag and, according to information he provided, he was a member of the Duden editorial team in Wiesbaden starting 1956. Instead of being executed for his crimes, he was an honored member of German society.
