The Left Book Club was a publishing group that exerted a strong left-wing influence in Great Britain from 1936 to 1948. Pioneered by Victor Gollancz, it offered a monthly book choice, for sale to members only,…as well as a newsletter that acquired the status of a major political magazine. It also held an annual rally. Membership peaked at 57,000, but after the Soviet-Nazi non-aggression pact of 1939, it disowned its large Communist element, and subsequent years of paper-rationing, during and after the war, led to further decline. It ceased publishing in 1948. Alongside the Fabian Society and Transport House, the LBC's popularising of socialist ideas was a major influence behind the Labour victory in the general election of 1945. Containing 12 original monochrome photographs + 1 loose photograph of Edith Cavell's grave in Norwich. The photographs are corner mounted on light brown card stock being captioned in French, English and Dutc…h to the rear and marked with the photographers name. Edith Cavell is celebrated for treating wounded soldiers from both sides without discrimination and for covertly helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium and return to active service during the First World War. The interior of the front flap has been repaired at some point in time with scarlet linen tape enabling it to tuck-in securely, else in Very Good clean condition. Member of the P.B.F.A. This work was presented to the membership at the 1894 meeting, as noted on the front cover and in the minutes of the 1894 assembly. The pamphlet includes a transcript of the 1893 meeting, which occurred at the Society Club House at 236 Fifth Avenue on February 13, 1893. At this meeting, a portrait painted by James H. Beard of Gen. William T. Sherman was presented by the society president, Colonel William L. Strong, to the Ohio Society. Souvenir monograph signed by Ohio Gov.
