Paperback. Condition: Good. An insider's guide that shows ambitious students how to optimize their college career, completely revised and updated for today's academic landscape. I WISH I'D KNOWN THAT IN COLLEGEYour time as an undergrad has the potential to be incredibly fun, rewarding, and life changing in ways you may not yet even imagine-that is, if you play your cards right and take full advantage of what your university has to offer. Sadly, very few students ever learn the secret handshake of how to make the most of their college years. Until now. For undergrads (and parents) hoping their tuition will pay off, GETTING THE BEST OUT OF COLLEGE is a must-read. Distilling more than fifty years of experience from some of the leading minds at top tier institutions, GETTING THE BEST OUT OF COLLEGE reveals insider advice that makes the hefty price tag worth it: how to impress professors, live with a roommate, pick the best courses (and do well in them), design a meaningful transcript, earn remarkable internships, prepare for a successful career after graduation, and much more. This new edition also includes feedback from students who put GETTING THE BEST OUT OF COLLEGE to the test, as well as new chapters on what to do when college "just isn't working" and unique opportunities with international students and study abroad. With a new forward by Duke University's Coach K, GETTING THE BEST OUT OF COLLEGE gives invaluable advice that enables students (and their parents!) to make the most of their college years.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In the late 1970s, an extraordinary scientist and leader in the development of modern analytical chemistry left a prominent career at the University of Illinois, and, to the surprise of many, channeled his passion for academic excellence and innovation into what would become a worldwide missions university. His name was Dr. Howard Malmstadt, and everything he did, he did with intelligence, insight, and vision. Into the Light tells the story of this remarkable scientist, professor, and missions innovator€a man whose mark on the twentieth century is seen in the thousands of individuals who have carried on his work in science and service. Hardback. Condition: Good. LONGLISTED FOR THE 2020 BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE In this brilliant second and final volume of the definitive biography of Lucian Freud--one of the most influential, enigmatic and secretive artists of the twentieth century--William Feaver, the noted art critic, draws on years of daily conversations with Freud, on his private papers and letters and on interviews with his friends and family to explore the intimate life of Freud, from age forty-five to his death in 2011 at the age of eighty-nine. The final forty years of Freud's life were a period of increasing recognition and fame, and of prodigious output. He was obsessed with his art, and with the idea of producing paintings that astonish, disturb, seduce, convince. He was equally energetic and ambitious in his private life. This book opens with his dramatic affair with Jacquetta Eliot, which led to some of his most intimate portraits and to the start of two important, lifelong friendships, with Jane Willoughby and Susanna Chancellor. Freud talks about his art at all stages, how it changed in the seventies and his first retrospective in London in 1974. His move to a new studio in Holland Park in the late seventies marked an important increase in the scale of his work, such as Large Interior W11 (After Watteau), which was his breakthrough painting. In this space, people would come and go--his children, his lover, the painter Celia Paul and all the sitters from his nightlife. His close friendship with Francis Bacon would end and be replaced with that of Frank Auerbach. His obsession with gambling would give way to work, and from the nineties through the 2000s, a wide range of subjects would sit for him, including the performance artist Leigh Bowery; Kate Moss; Jerry Hall; supervisor Sue Tilley; his longtime assistant, David Dawson; his own children; and, in 2001, Queen Elizabeth. Two phenomenally successful exhibitions would transform his international reputation: the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington DC in 1988 and a retrospective at the Tate in 2002. Here is Freud's voice--still as fierce, complicated, witty and charismatic as in his youth--talking about his art, his friends and lovers and the gossip about them all, making this volume, like the first, a nod to autobiography. Vivid and engrossing, The Lives of Lucian Freud is a dazzling and authoritative tour de force that reveals important new details about the thoughts, the life and the work of this elusive artist.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. Hand-Off details the Bush administration's national security and foreign policy as described at the time in then-classified Transition Memoranda prepared by the National Security Council experts who advised President Bush. Thirty of these Transition Memoranda, newly declassified and here made public for the first time, provide a detailed, comprehensive, and first-hand look at the foreign policy the Bush administration turned over to President Obama. In a postscript to each memorandum, these same experts now in hindsight take a remarkably self- critical look at that Bush foreign policy legacy after more than a dozen years of watching subsequent administrations attempt to deal with the same vexing agenda of threats and opportunities-- China, Russia, Iran, the Middle East, terrorism, proliferation, cyber, pandemics, and climate change--an agenda that still dominates America's national security and foreign policy. Hand-Off will be an invaluable resource for scholars, students, policy analysts, and general readers seeking to understand afresh the Bush administration's foreign policy, particularly in view of the records of the Obama, Trump, and Biden administrations.…
