Paperback. Condition: Good. Your Neighbor's Hymnal provides a winsome and thoughtful exploration of popular music, from rock to hip-hop to metal to soul, as a vital source contemporary culture continues to go to learn about faith, hope, and love. Where some Christians have kept their focus only on a hymnal found in their church or formed by the genre of Contemporary Christian Music, Keuss argues that your neighbor's hymnal is filled with great music that God is using and deserves a deeper listen. Offering forty songs spanning time and genres, each section includes a number of representative reflections on the history and artist that created the song, reflections on its lyrical content, and theological and biblical connections that will hopefully show some ways in which the song illustrates how your neighbor is hearing, seeking, and finding faith, hope, and love through popular music. This book can be approached in a number of ways. As an introduction to this stream of popular culture, the overviews and short introductions to each song provide a glossary useful in courses needing texts in theology and popular culture. For use with church groups, whether adult bible studies or youth groups, Your Neighbor's Hymnal provides points of reference for connecting key aspects of the Christian faith with illustrations readily available for discussion. For interested music listeners, the book will provide a means of giving voice to their own musings on faith. As with faith, good music is meant to be shared, and Your Neighbor's Hymnal offers a wonderful opportunity to do both.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. Over its fifty-year existence, John F. Blair, Publisher, has become known for its Southern folklore--its tales of ghosts, goblins, ghouls, spirits, witches, devils, phantoms, haints, boogers, boo-daddies, plat-eyes, demons, apparitions, Doppelgangers, banshees, disappearing hitchhikers, pirate legends, ghost dogs, dog ghosts, dogs who see ghosts . . .In recognition of its golden anniversary, the company offers this volume of twenty stories culled from its folklore collections. You'll likely be impressed at the timeless quality of the tales, some of which have never been out of print since they first appeared in the 1960s. And you may be surprised to learn of their broad appeal, the collections having sold a total of over six hundred thousand copies. Some of these tales are now being enjoyed by their third generation of readers. If you don't know what a coffin baby is, read Milk and Candy by Randy Russell and Janet Barnett. If you'd like to meet a real-life pirate who'd make a better Hollywood character than any swashbuckler yet seen on celluloid, you'll enjoy Stede Bonnet by Nancy Roberts. If there's a place in your heart for a pair of lifesaving little dogs who've scampered on the same South Carolina beach for over a hundred years, try Pawleys Island Terriers by Elizabeth Robertson Huntsinger. If you prefer folklore with a historical touch, you can learn about Theodosia Burr Alston in Charles Harry Whedbee's Lady in Distress and about Francis Marion in Daniel W. Barefoot's Ghostly Legacy of the Swamp Fox. The folklorists included here claim stomping grounds from the high peaks and mountain hollows to the flatlands to the swamps to the barrier islands to the briny deep. What they share is a love of their subject and the ability to bring it to life on the page. …

Paperback. Condition: Good. In my late-fifties, I've been blessed to enjoy the best of all worlds- both personally and professionally. My romance with Carl, my husband of 40 years, is still going strong and we're extremely proud of our sons, Kenneth and Cory. I've enjoyed several successful careers including interior design, marketing, image development, and mortgage finance. However, life hasn't always been so blissful. In January of 1984 my world was abruptly interrupted when I discovered our son, Collin, drowned in our backyard pool. Three weeks later I was abducted by two men, sexually assaulted at gun-point, and abandoned. As a defense mechanism my mind shut down and blocked out those traumatic events, leaving me in a deep state of denial and drained of any color in my life. Sessions with the psychiatrist were primarily silent on my part, thus unproductive until several months later, when the doctor gave me the challenging assignment to write about my first memories. An unexpected surprise came when my first memory was a very sweet one--the image of my father and me as a little girl. That vision opened a floodgate of memories that unfolded onto the pages over the next several months, eventually bringing me back to reality. Edgewise reflects those memories, with interspersed scenes in the psychiatrist's office chronicling my progression. Delaney is my alter ego, and all the names are changed to protect the innocent, and the not so innocent. The manuscript was recognized Novel of the Year by the Atlanta Writers Club in 1996. I'm inspired when I read about someone overcoming life's roadblocks, and I hope my readers are inspired in the same way. The events upon which Edgewise is based have made me stronger and more compassionate of others, and I thank God I'm here today to share my story.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Our family did not go to church, nor did I know anything about Christianity while growing up in San Diego, California. I became active in a variety of sports such as basketball, surfing, bowling, billiards, ping pong and Tiddlywinks. I worked a variety of jobs while attending San Diego State University. I graduated in 1976 and also acquired a teaching credential. In the midst of all this Jesus Christ entered the drama of my life. It wasn't long before the drama became a rescue story. Jesus saved me from myself. I was my own worst enemy and didn't even know it. Thank you, Jesus. The last place I thought I would ever step foot in was a church. However, now that Jesus was guiding my steps, his church was where I had to be. I got involved teaching Sunday school with the sixth graders and I also helped with the church's youth group. The Lord straightened out my life, put me on his blessed path and led me to the love of my life. Her name is Brenda. She became my wife that same year. An amazing thing happened: the church asked me to be their youth pastor. Those years of leading young people in the Lord was a blessing. The blessing kept growing leading us to plant a church where we still are today. We raised two children in that setting who are now adults living blessed lives in the Lord. I was then blessed to earn a Masters of Divinity Degree from Bethel Seminary in San Diego graduating in the year 2,000. The Lord led me to start Christian Life Tools as a way to extend his salvation and blessing to others. May God's salvation and blessing be on all who pick up this book.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Buffalo was once a proud, strong, important city. Burned by the British during the War of 1812, it rebuilt and eventually became the Erie Canal's western terminus. From its earliest days through the Industrial Age, Buffalo welcomed the 20th Century with open arms, reaching a zenith of sorts when it hosted the Pan-American Exposition in 1901. It was a time when every aspect of a building mattered. Offices and factories were designed to reflect in outward appearance the strength of the company itself. Buffalo was known for much more than merely Chicken Wings. This book is Buffalo in photographs and history. It is a glimpse into the past through the architecture of factories, banks and more. You may have passed many of these buildings on the way to work. Perhaps you grew up in proximity to one and never thought to notice it. Maybe you wondered what the company that occupied the building actually did. Companies that once were proud to be part of Buffalo's landscape, Queen-O pop, Curtiss-Wright, Wonder Bread, form the basis for the book. Although there are many beautiful public, religious and residential structures, only commercial buildings were chose for this work. Many are abandoned today, a handful not. Some will never be occupied again, bringing us back to that time when buildings mattered, and companies cared about their appearance as much as their bottom line. These weren't disposable buildings like the ones being built today. Sadly, Buffalo will never be the same, but we can remember these companies and buildings and hope for a better future. Each photo is accompanied by a history of the business. It is a different look at Buffalo, and a remembrance of its once powerful past. …
