Early American edition. i-xii, 13-481, [10] pages. H 20cm x L 13cm. Original cloth but heavily sun faded so as to now have a rather bleached appearance; spine lettering heavily dulled as is gilt stamped crown decorating the front board, boards rubbed with some soiling, slender dark staining along front and rear joints, mild fraying at spine ends, board corners bumped and nicked with top corner of rear board worn. Ownership signatures in pencil on front endpapers; slight binding spilt evident between frontispiece and title page but binding remains fairly firm; mostly mild but occasionally moderate foxing upon interior leaves; a few page corners creased from past fold-downs. Includes fifteen illustrated plates amongst text (plus frontis) all drawn by H.K. Browne and James Godwin and engraved by Hugh Dalziel and George Dalziel. List of Illustrations on page xi cites an illustration at page 346 which actually is at page 340 - otherwise collates as complete. Includes ten page publisher's catalogue at rear. Original red and stamped gilt pictorial cloth (vases of flowers on boards, decorative spine) , 5 x 7 1/2 inches, 144 pp + 10 pp publisher's ads, illustrated with 4 plates (with tissue guards) and illuminated initial letters. Hardcover, fair. Soil on cloth, corners bumped with a bit of cardboard exposed there, spine slightly tanned, approximately 1/4 inch fraying at head and foot, open tear along entire front joint. Internally, previous owner's gift inscription (in pencil) , front and rear hinges cracked, additional hinge cracks between a few of the gatherings, foxing on first and last few leaves, on and adjacent to plates and tissue guards, less so throughout, 1 plate and tissue guard loose (laid-in) , otherwise tight, clean, relatively crisp and unmarked. Poems on death, nature, love, (Robert) Emmet, and a few more or less occult themes: "The Alchymist" (alchemist) , "Hans Van Ryn: A Ghost Story" and a lengthy one, "The Demon Picture Gallery" in which a dreamer is visited by demons representing various evils, each introduced by curious illuminated initial letters by Swinton & Fay. Poems; literature; Victorian; poetry.

Headley's "Illustrated Life of George Washington" (1860) Image measures 6 1/2" x 5" (14" x 11" matted). Matted in white stock with clear mylar. Lovely clean, brightly colored engraving. After repulsing an advance party of Major James Grant of the 1st Highland Regiment an his 850 men, the French, deserted by some of their native allies and vastly outnumbered by the approachingarmy of General Forbes and his 6,000 troops, blew up their magazines and burnt Fort Duquesne. In November the French withdrew from the Ohio Valley and British colonists erected Fort Pitt on the site.
