Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. A reprint of W.H. Emory's "Notes of a Military Reconnoissance." Book is itself a reprint and out-of-print. Exterior has three prior owner identifiers blacked out (along fore edge, and on inside cover of both front and rear). Interior text/maps are excellent. Other than these three marks, entire book is very clean, square along the edges, and tightly bound.

Trade paperback. Condition: Very good. [6], 208 pages. Illustrations. Maps. Notes. Minor wear noted. This is a reprint of Lieutenant W. H. Emory's Notes of a Military Reconnoissance. William Hemsley Emory (September 7, 1811 - December 1, 1887) was a prominent American surveyor and civil engineer. He specialized in mapping the United States border, including the Texas-Mexico border, and the Gadsden Purchase border, and published lasting scientific reports on the border region. Emory was selected to join General Kearny and the Army of the West to take New Mexico and California. He kept a detailed journal of the march down the Rio Grande and across to the Gila River, and the Colorado River, then to the Pacific Coast. Published as Notes of a Military Reconnaissance from Fort Leavenworth to San Diego, it became an important guide book for the road to Southern California. This report described terrain and rivers, cities and forts. It is considered one of the important chronicles and descriptions of the historic Southwest. The present edition includes a facsimile. of the title page. of the Long edition and the text of that edition with minor revisions. Includes [6] maps of the expedition but no other illustrations from the original edition. Omits appendices published with the Senate and House editions. Many people love the American Southwest without truly understanding it. Ross Calvin did and we are the richer for it. He used his observational skills and intellect to fashion a picture that helped him and us comprehend those unique factors that make New Mexico what it is--its history, people, culture, climate, and so much more. Those lessons learned he shared with us. His books and essays help open our eyes to New Mexico. Paperbound edition [stated]. Presumed first printing.
