Externally, mostly smart, with slight fading to the spine and to the extremities, a little heavier to Karloff. The odd mark to boards of Sowerby, and signs of browning. Slight edgewear, and rubbing to joints of Sowerby and Saxby. Offsetting to free end papers of Saxby and Sowerby, heavier to Saxby, with the odd spot and minor browning to end papers of Karloff. End paper hinges have failed to Sowerby. Internally, generally firmly bound, with leaves pp.17-40 disbound from Sowerby and hinge between leaves 32-33 loosening. In addition to his work as an illustrator of children's books, John George Sowerby (1849-1914) was known as a painter of landscapes and flowers. He and Henry Hetherington Emmerson (1831-1895) also collaborated on The May Blossom, published by Warne in 1881. The illustrations are reminiscent of the work of Kate Greenaway, whose Under the Window was published in 1879, and Greenaway is said to have described Afternoon Tea as 'piracy'. …
