Collection of weird fiction by these Alsatian authors, who began their collaboration in 1847, finally finding success in the 1860s with French historical fiction. Their output did include some tales of horror, included in a series of British translations, but the pair fell into obscurity by 1900, though praised by both M. R. James and H. P. Lovecraft. Editor Lamb began including their tales in anthologies, and a collection was published by Millington in 1981, most of which appear to have vanished after that publisher's bankruptcy. A fascinating American educational edition of Erckmann-Chatrian's celebrated historical novel Madame Thérèse, specially prepared for American high schools at the beginning of the twentieth century. Unlike the original French edition, editor C. Fontaine substantially abridged the novel for classroom use, reducing the vocabulary to approximately 3,800 words while adding explanatory notes and historical references. The introduction explains that the work was intended for second-year French students and follows recommendations of the Modern Language Association. The novel is set in Alsace-Lorraine during the French Revolutionary Wars and vividly portrays the upheaval of the revolutionary period through the experiences of ordinary citizens. Erckmann-Chatrian's historical novels became some of the most influential works used in French-language instruction throughout Europe and North America during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Particularly desirable is the original folding campaign map illustrating military operations in Alsace and Lorraine during 1792-93, a feature frequently absent from surviving classroom copies. Signed in her maiden name, "Annie Austin," before her 1918 marriage to Dr. Charles Henry Young. Dr. Young: graduated from Presbyterian College at an unusually young age with highest honors, earned top honors at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, achieved the highest score ever recorded on the South Carolina Medical Board examination at the time, practiced medicine for more than sixty years, delivered over 10,000 babies, and became only the second woman inducted into the South Carolina Hall of Fame in 1981. …
