Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. VENICE THE MENTOR AUGUST 18, 1913 VENICE THE ISLAND CITY 6 SEPIA PRINTS LAID-IN. I have recently acquired a box load of vintage The Mentor magazines, dating from about 1913 to 1922. My inclination is to offer them in "year lots," organized in lots from a given year together, with a minimum of fu…ss & bother but we shall see. Actually, some of these back issues of The Mentor need or should be offered singly, such as this one. I began listing the youngest issues I have on- hand (from 1922 & 1921) so here is one of the oldest (1913), to wit: "The MentorA Wise and Faithful Guide and FriendVenice, The Island City," Vol. 1, August 18, 1913, No. 27. This issue includes an article (only 12 pages) by Dwight L. Elmendorf, Lecturer and Traveler, and also six stand-alone, sepia toned, prints (St. Mark's Cathedral, Doge's Palace and Campanile, Bridge of Sighs, Grand Canal, Typical Venetian Canal, and the Rialto Bridge), each with a full page of double column explanations on the rear. Condition: This magazine issue is in very good condition. The soft covers are rubbed and bumped and show edge wear, including bent upper right-hand corners. The staples show a bit of rusting but this is hard to see and does not affect the pages. There are a few insect holes in the rear cover and the spine tips are bit ragged. The interior pages are clean and bright but share the bent corners. One or two of the six prints have one soiled edge and some edge wear as well but are generally clean and attractive. I did see one tiny tear in the Rialto Bridge print. No age toning or foxing to speak of. This magazine copy is not ex-library.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. This copy of "Holland" by Dwight L. Elmendorf, is a complete 1914 stand-alone article disbound from a larger collection of disparate subject matters. It was published by the Mentor Association Department of Travel as "The "Mentor", Volume 2, No. 6, Serial No. 58. This disbound monograph consists… of 24 pages, including those that make up the sepia gravures (with text on the reverse sides); it has 22 vignette black-and-white photographs through the text. Included with the monograph is a brief list for further reading. At the end of the article are 6 handsome sepia gravure plates printed on a stiff card stock. There are explanatory texts for each picture. Through the text, black and white illustrations present other well-known views of The Netherlands. The six gravures depict The Ryks Museum, Amsterdam; Veen Kade, The Hague; Street Scene in Rotterdam; Street Scene in Amsterdam; Montalbans Tower, Amsterdam; Scene in Haarlem. lmendorf was an American Painter and Photographer.Aside from writing for various periodicals, Elmendorf toured from city to city, giving travelogue presentations that were quite popular.
