Mencken was quite influential in the early part of the 20th century but he went out of fashion in the 1930s; he could not stand up to the new tide that glorified the common man, even though that sprang in part from depths containing a Meckenian contempt for the common man. The mass defection of the Menckian cult into the arms of the New Deal was a most significant irony of 20th century American life. It left hanging the question of what Mencken had really been up to, Whether he had been a baffoon or a philospoher, and where he fitted into the intellectual, social, and political history of this most critical time.
