Hardcover (Original Cloth). Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition. Â"Letters mingle souls," said John Donne, and no better proof of this statement could be found than this collection cf the letters of Kahlil Gibran, author of Â'The ProphetÂ', Â'The Broken WingsÂ' and Â'The Voice of the MasterÂ'. The le…tters in this book cover the years from 1904- to 1930 and are an illuminating self-portrait of the poet during his most productive period. There are letters to his sister Miriana and other members of his family; thoughtful letters to his editor, Ameen Guraieb; and, above all, impassioned letters to May Ziadeh, the Lebanese writer with whom Gibran formed an extraordinary relationship entirely through correspondence. This intimate record of a restless, creative mind has been translated with sensitive perspicacity by Anthony Rizcalla Ferris, who has also written helpful explanatory notes to accompany them. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 94 pages. Rear cover slightly grubby & faint ink marks to front cover. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Endpapers browned, text block clean. Dust Jacket worn at edges, small chips and tears. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Silver titles spine. red cloth. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 250 grams. Category: Biography & Autobiography; Letters; Arabic Literature; Oriental Literature; Lebanon; Literature & Literary. Inventory No: 3546.

The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean, but have generalized toning. The dust jacket has several small…edge tears, some rubbing and nicking, along with bumping to the spine ends. The rear cover has several small spots of ground-in dirt. "Born in a village of the Ottoman-ruled Mount Lebanon Mutasarrifate to a Maronite family, the young Gibran immigrated with his mother and siblings to the United States in 1895. As his mother worked as a seamstress, he was enrolled at a school in Boston, where his creative abilities were quickly noticed by a teacher who presented him to photographer and publisher F. Holland Day. Gibran was sent back to his native land by his family at the age of fifteen to enroll at the Collège de la Sagesse in Beirut. Returning to Boston upon his youngest sister's death in 1902, he lost his older half-brother and his mother the following year, seemingly relying afterwards on his remaining sister's income from her work at a dressmaker's shop for some time. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. 1st American Edition; 1st Printing. This is a Stated First Edition. This book is in Very Good- condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean condition. The text pages are clean, but noticeably generally toned due t…o the acid content of the paper. The dust jacket has some light generalized rubbing and a couple of very small edge tears. "In 1904, Gibran's drawings were displayed for the first time at Day's studio in Boston, and his first book in Arabic was published in 1905 in New York City. With the financial help of a newly met benefactress, Mary Haskell, Gibran studied art in Paris from 1908 to 1910. While there, he came in contact with Syrian political thinkers promoting rebellion in the Ottoman Empire after the Young Turk Revolution; some of Gibran's writings, voicing the same ideas as well as anti-clericalism, would eventually be banned by the Ottoman authorities. In 1911, Gibran settled in New York, where his first book in English, The Madman, would be published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1918, with writing of The Prophet or The Earth Gods also underway. His visual artwork was shown at Montross Gallery in 1914, and at the galleries of M. Knoedler & Co. In 1917. He had also been corresponding remarkably with May Ziadeh since 1912." (from Wikipedia).

Attractive copy- undated copyright 1957- Pebble finished Burgandy with guild title- " This is the exquisitely tender story of love that beats desperately against the taboos of Oriental tradition. With great sensitivity, Gibran describes his passion as a youth for Selma Karamy, the girl of Beirut who first unfolded to him the sec…rets of love. But it is a love that is doomed by a social convention that forces Selma into marriage with another man. Portraying the happiness and infinite sorrow of his relationship with Selma, Gibran at the same time probes the spiritual meaning of human existence with profound compassion." name on the inside cover and some edge wear to the cover.
