Soft cover. Condition: New. Marriage is near universal in India. For women, like it or not, marriage and motherhood become their career choices . Families, society, peer groups, young girls, themselves, are so conditioned as to make the inevitability of marriage, the desirable norm. But is this beginning to change? The Census of… 2011 reported that there were 25 million never-married women in India, an increase of approximately 35 per cent from the turn of this century. Add to this the number of women seeking divorce, also rising dramatically, and the institution of marriage begins to look a little less unshakeable. The 13 happily unmarried women in this anthology have arrived at their singledom from a variety of perspectives and experiences, but have one critical factor in common-none of them needs the social sanction of marriage, and all of them cherish their independence. They make a strong case for women s economic autonomy, but also for alternative relationships and communities of support-marital families are not the only option in their life-plans.

Soft cover. Condition: New. Plant breeding is the purposeful manipulation of plant species in order to create desired genotypes and phenotypes by improving the genetic makeup of crop plants in relation to their economic use. This manipulation involves either controlled pollination, genetic engineering, or both, followed by artif…icial selection of progeny. In its primitive form, plant breeding started after the invention of agriculture during which plants were transformed from being independent, wild progenitors, to fully dependent (on humans) and domesticated varieties. During this period, humans also discovered the time-honored and most basic plant breeding technique 'selection', the art of discriminating among biological variation in a population to identify and pick desirable variants. Selection implies the existence of variability. The selection was based solely on the intuition, skill, and judgment of the operator. Needless to say, this form of selection is practiced to date by farmers, where they save seed from the best-looking plants or the most desirable fruit for planting the next season.

Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Empowerment of women through gainful employment is a constituent - as well as instrument - of development in any country. No country can be deemed developed if half of its population is severely disadvantaged in terms of basic needs, livelihood options, access to knowledge and political vo…ice. A natural corollary of ensuring gender equality is the elimination of gender discrimination. Women's lack of economic empowerment not only impedes growth and poverty reduction, but also has a host of other negative impacts including less favourable education and health outcomes for children. Thus, it is extremely important to ensure that women are economically, socially and politically empowered. Effective and coordinated plans and programmes for the full implementation of women-oriented policies require a clear research-based knowledge of ground realities of the socio-economic status of women, particularly rural women. This volume is the outcome of the findings of academicians and researchers from different disciplines. The 11 papers included in this work throw light on various dimensions of women empowerment in India. (jacket).

Women's lack of economic empowerment not only impedes growth and poverty reduction, but also negatively impacts education and health outcomes for children. Thus it is extremely important to ensure that women are economically empowered. Financial inclusion may be defined as the process of ensuring access to financial services and timely and adequate credit where needed by vulnerable groups, such as women, at an affordable cost. Self-help Group SHG Bank Linkage Programme was launched in 1992 as flagship programme by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development NABARD. The objective is to meet the financial needs of the poor by linking SHGs with the formal credit agencies. Financial inclusion of the women can be best ensured through SHGs.

Never again. On the intervening night of December 2-3, 1984, methyl isocyanate gas leaking from Union Carbide's factory in Bhopal cla…imed more than 5,000 lives. More than half a million people still suffer the side effects of the exposure to the gas; the soil and groundwater have been contaminated and toxicity has crossed over to the second and third generations. This book describes the criminal negligence, incompetent governance and the apathy towards victims that have made Bhopal a continuing disaster. It gives voice to people's anguish and is also a testimony to the Centre for Science and Environment's and Down To Earth's long engagement with Bhopal. This book argues that India cannot afford to let Bhopal fade from public memory and concludes with a blueprint to avoid a similar tragedy.

Bhakti in the Classroom: What Do American Students Hear?/Richard H. Davis. Bibliography. Index. Bhakti means many things to many people. It is private and public, personal and political, silently contemplative and loudly musical. Often it speaks in the marginalized voices of women and the oppressed, yet it has also played a role in perpetuating injustice. What, then, is the power of bhakti? And how does it interact with forms of power other than its own? Bhakti and Power provides an accessible entry into these issues, presenting voices and vignettes from the sixth century to the present. It asks a range of questions. Is bhakti lower-class, middle-class, or ruler-class? Is its power intrinsically tied to music and the arts? Does it address the earth and ecology, or broker the divides between Hindus, Muslims and Jains? Does bhakti have gender and if so, how? Each chapter is short and pointed, generating a world of its own, but each becomes a piece in a bigger puzzle. Readers will come away with new resources for thinking about bhakti and power in specific and varied situations-and also in broad and general terms. Historians, sociologists, religionists, and students of literature, politics, and the arts will all be enriched by this discussion.
