13 volumes complete. Octavos [24.5 cm] Burgundy cloth with printed paper labels on backstrips. All volumes near fine. Profusely illustrated throughout with more than 1200 engravings, plates, diagrams, and drawings. Written primarily by the famous French Egyptologist Gaston Maspero, this comprehensive collection is regarded as one of the most significant early academic histories of the Near East. It traces over 4,000 years of civilization, focusing on how these rival empires interacted, traded, and fought for dominance across Egypt and Mesopotamia. Volumes 1-9 are by Gaston Maspero and translated by M.L. McClure, focus heavily on Egypt and the parallel Mesopotamian superpowers. Volumes 10-12 are by Angelo Solomon Rappoport, tracking Egyptian history from the conquest of Alexander the Great (330 BCE) through the modern era. Volume 13 is by Leonard W. King and Henry R. Hall with a focus on the discoveries that occurred after the publication of the earlier volumes in this set by Maspero.
