Robert Harding's introduction begins: In the days when Britain stood in the way of Napoleon Bonaparte an English boy, named George Borrow, travelled with his father and mother all over the British Isles, where he steeped himself in the deep-rooted lore of the countryside, visiting horse fairs, bare-knuckle boxing contests, legend-haunted castles, homely inns and taverns, and became friendly with the Romany people, whose customs and speech captivated him.
