Couverture rigide. Condition: Comme neuf. Edition originale. New York , 2021. Hardback , Quarto size . Reliure éditeur illustrée. Format in-4° ------ 640 pages . ********************* "" The sixth and final volume of this exceptional catalogue raisonné project features over 360 works made by John Baldessari (1931-2020) between 2…011 and 2019. Here, Baldessari continues his longstanding tradition of borrowing from artists as varied as David Hockney, Giotto, Gustave Courbet, Maria Lassnig, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Giorgio Morandi, and Jackson Pollock. Many of the works in this volume are a testament to the artist's fascination and engagement with art from previous eras. In one example, Baldessari's 2012 series "Double Bill" combines scenes from pairs of paintings, such as a Willem de Kooning face atop a Jean Dubuffet body, with the words, "And Dubuffet" painted beneath: Baldessari is effectively collaborating with artists he has revered for years. This volume also surveys Baldessari's complete film and video output, from 1968 to 2004, as well as the artist's books he made, from 1972 to 2019. Additionally, an appendix catalogues works, mostly pre-1974, that were unknown at the time Volume 1 was published. "" ********************* ref fav-08-75379.

Format in-4° ------ 533 pages . ********************* ""This volume covers six years, from 2005 - 2010, in which Baldessari created a total of 361 unique works-comprising eight discrete series, most w…ith multiple parts or, to borrow a musical phrase, "movements." The majority of the works from this period have as their subject the face and body: noses, ears, arms, legs, elbows, knees, eyes, eyebrows, foreheads, hands, and feet. We might entertain this as the artist finally revealing to the viewer what he previously had taken such great pains to conceal and obscure with his trademark colored disks and erasures. Perhaps this is partly true, but since his earliest days as an artist, Baldessari has never felt comfortable providing the viewer with the full picture. "" ********************* ref fav-08-75379.

Format in-4° ------ 496 pages . ********************* "" Brand New Book. Compiling four-hundred-plus unique works of art, this volume traces the shifts and developments in conceptual artist John Balde…ssari s work from 1975-86. It covers his photo-based works such as the Strobe, Word Chain, and Pathetic Fallacy series from 1975; the Violent Space and the seminal Concerning Diachronic/Synchronic Time: Above, On, Under (With Mermaid), from 1976; and the Blasted Allegories series from 1977-78, which drew heavily from the artist s vast collection of photo stills taken from commercial television. In the 1980s, Baldessari s art took a different direction, beginning with the expansive Fugitive Essays triptychs from 1980 and leading to 1982 s photographic interpretations of Grimm s Fairy Tales. Building on these themes, Baldessari began producing a body of work that was inspired in part by dreams, psychology, film, and popular culture. Ensuing works were more formal, elaborate, and large-scale. From 1984 to 1986 Baldessari created a number of works that employed his soon-to-be-signature colored discs painted over people s faces in the photos. An introductory essay will provide a close reading of selected works and a historical context for understanding Baldessari s art from this period. A detailed chronology and exhibition history and bibliography are also included. This is the second of a projected four-volume catalogue raisonne ************************** ref fav-08-75379.

Format in-4° ------ 552 pages . ********************* "" A comprehensive look at works made by Baldessari between the years 1987 and 1993 This handsome volume, the third of the John Baldessari (b. 193…1) catalogue raisonne project, compiles 400-plus unique works of art made by the influential conceptual artist from 1987 through 1993. Here we see the artist s large-scale photo-based works, many of which employed his signature colored discs painted over the faces of people in the photos, accompanied by entries that trace the shifts and developments in Baldessari s work as his collaged photo narratives achieved maturity and mastery. A critical essay by Briony Fer provides a close reading of selected works, giving historical context for Baldessari s art from this period. In addition to a detailed chronology, complete exhibition history, and bibliography, this volume notably features a previously unpublished conversation between Baldessari and the artist Ed Ruscha, which was undertaken specifically for this publication. In the conversation, the artists discuss their early careers in Southern California and the shared thematic concerns in their work. The artworks in this volume demonstrate Baldessari s ability to express-and, in many cases, combine-the narrative potential of images and the associative power of language within the boundaries of a single piece. ************************** ref fav-08-75379.

Couverture rigide. Condition: Comme neuf. Edition originale. New York , 2012. Hardback , Quarto size . Reliure éditeur illustrée. Format in-4° ------ 496 pages . ********************* "" The pioneering conceptual artist John Baldessari (b. 1931) began his career as a painter in the 1950s, but in the subsequent decades he expande…d his practice in a new and groundbreaking direction by juxtaposing texts with found photography or appropriated images. These texts questioned the nature of art and the art-viewing experience, suggesting new meanings for the images they accompanied. This interaction of words and images remained a critical aspect of Baldessari s work, even as he branched into other media, such as site-specific installations, drawings, video, sculpture, prints, and multiples. The first of a projected four-volume set, this lavishly illustrated book features about 500 works and chronicles an important shift in Baldessari s thinking during these formative years. Included are such landmark works as the Cremation Project (1970), where Baldessari incinerated the body of work he had made between the years 1953 and 1966. The ashes of the cremated works were then baked into cookies, and the rest sealed in a book-shaped urn, which he then presented along with a plaque announcing the life and death dates. Baldessari s work and teaching have been greatly influential on a subsequent generation of artists. The book features an essay by Yve-Alain Bois considering Baldessari s ethos as a generator of his artistic practice. Also included are an interview with Christopher Knight and a detailed chronology of the artist s life and work. ************************** ref fav-08-75379.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. JOHN BALDESSARI CATALOGUE RAISONNÉ - COMPLETE SIX VOLUME SET - SIGNED & INSCRIBED TO MARGO LEAVIN plus THREE SIGNED AND NUMBERED LABELS for his rare print SMOKE, TREE, SHADOW, and PERSON". From the collection of MARGO LEAVIN of MARGO LEAVIN GALLERY. Margo Leavin represented Baldessari from 1984 t…o 2013. SIGNATURES and INSCRIPTIONS are as follows: Volume One: HAND SIGNED "BALDESSARI" in black on the half title page, and signed by Robert Dean, the book's editor, in blue by his name on the title page. Also, laid into VOLUME ONE are THREE ORIGINAL SIGNED AND NUMBERED COLOPHON/LIMITATION LABELS for JOHN BALDESSARI'S PRINT "SMOKE, TREE, SHADOW, AND PERSON". Only 50 prints were made. A numbered and signed label was meant to be attached to the blank backside of each of the 50 prints, and those copies that have sold at auction all have such a label. The labels measure 2x3 inches and were meant to be peeled from their backing for attachment to the print. THESE THREE ORIGINAL LABELS are numbered: 23/50, 24/50 and 25/50, and each is HAND SIGNED by BALDESSARI. Why Margo Leavin had these labels is uncertain, but perhaps she had some Baldessari "Smoke" prints at her gallery which were never sold and so these labels were never attached. The print "Smoke, Tree, Shadow, and Person" with an attached signed and numbered label has become highly sought after and very expensive (search various auction records). Volume Two: SIGNED "BALDESSARI XO" in black on the half title page. Volume Three: Signed and Inscribed: "For Margo From / John XO" in red on the half title page. Volume Four: Signed and Inscribed: "For Margo From John" in black on the half title page. Volume Five and Six are not signed. Volume Six was published after Baldessari's death, and Volume Five was published less than a year before his death. It is unlikely that any copies of Volume Five are signed. The six volumes of the John Baldessari Catalogue Raisonné were published by YALE UNIVERSITY PRESS, New Haven, Connecticut, in association with Marian Goodman Gallery, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2021.
