Arbuthnot (1667-1735) was a physician and satirist, who was linked with Pope and Swift in the Scriblerus Club founded in 1714. Top edges gilt. These volumes contain Daniel Defoe's story of the Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, together with the two sequels. Complete in themselves, they are part of a sixteen-volume edition of the Romances and Narratives by Daniel Defoe that was edited by George Atherton Aitken (1860-1917). The three volumes are uniformly bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling and designs on the spines. The cases of the books are in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards and light bumping to the spine ends. The spines have faded to a light brown colour. The contents are tight and clean with light foxing to the free endpapers, half-titles and last pages. The free endpapers are browned and there is a bookplate on the front fixed endpaper of each volume.
