Tissue guarded frontis. 303 pages, some pages unopened. IN arranging the selection of this edition of the Poets, the Publisher has been guided solely by two considerations-First, The emi…nence of the author, as indicated by the estimation in which he was held in the past, and the critical verdict of the present time. Secondly, The desire, both with regard to the minor and major Poets, to give a fair representation of the progress of our poetic literature, the history of which is exhibited in their works. Difference of opinion will always exist on the comparative merit of the earlier Poets, as their respective claims appeal so much to individual taste ; and this collection cannot escape some of the objections urged against all its predecessors. But by giving unabridged the works of the principal Authors, and illustrating the less known or popular by extracts from their writings, an endeavour has been made to give a completeness to this important portion of our literature, which, it is hoped, will meet with acceptance, as being adapted to the requirements of the general reader. The Publisher has always been alive to the fact that the value of the Series as a whole must largely depend on its being characterised by perfect accuracy of text ; and it is with no ordinary satisfaction that he refers to the testimonies, which are appended, regarding this important feature of his Edition. The text being edited by Mr CHARLES COWDEN CLARKE, whose intimate acquaintance with our early poetic literature is so well known, affords a guarantee which will be readily accepted for the most perfect text being secured. The Publisher therefore trusts that having produced an Edition of the British Poets unequalled in style and cheapness, he may, without presumption, claim for it equal authority, in the essential point of accuracy, with any reprint extant, however costly may have been the form of its production. Size: Lge 8vo.

Hardback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Hard Cover. Tartarus Press 2015. Limited Edition. Book condition: NM - Near Mint. Dust Jacket. None illustrations. Dust Jacket condition: NM - Near Mint. Speculative fiction is by definition in the vanguard of contemporary writing and particularly suited to the short story…form. This fifth volume of Strange Tales from Tartarus includes seventeen new stories by eight British and nine North American authors, some well-known and others up-and-coming in the field. As in previous volumes in this series, a wide range of literary strange fiction is represented here, from the science fiction of Charles Wilkinson's 'The Investigation of Innocence', to the historical fantasy-horror of Elise Forier Edie's 'You Go Back', to the stream-of-consciousness, psychological weirdness of Andrew Apter's 'The Man Who Loved Flies' to the evocative sleight of hand that is Mark Valentine's 'Yes, I Knew the Venusian Commodore'. These are, by any measure, superb short stories, and it is hoped that Strange Tales V will further the cause of contemporary speculative fiction and help introduce it to a wider audience. Containing: 'The Investigation of Innocence' by Charles Wilkinson, 'Julie' by L.S. Johnson, 'The Grave House' by Steve Rasnic Tem, 'A Life in Plastic' by Andrew Hook, 'Bardo Thodol Backup File' by Jacurutu:23, 'More Than India' by John Howard, 'You-Go-Back' by Elise Forier Edie, 'Stranger Must Go' by Douglas Penick, 'Beatrice Faraway's Christmas Tale' by Paul Bradley, 'Henge' by David Rix, 'Yes, I Knew the Venusian Commodore' by Mark Valentine, 'Mary Alice in the Mirror' by Yarrow Paisley, 'The Taxidermist's Tale' by Tara Isabella Burton, 'The Man Who Loved Flies' by Andrew Apter, 'Purses' by Nathan Alling Long, 'Look for the Place Where the Ivy Rises' by Tom Johnstone, 'McBirdy' by David McGroarty. 296 pages. Size: 7" x 10" (170mm x 250mm). (1.5). Steven J Clarke (cover) (illustrator).
