Add to basketHardcover. Near fine condition. First edition, sole UK printing, published by the Camberwell Press in 1996. Large-format volume, 37.5 cm square. This is number 165 of a very limited edition of 225 copies, signed and numbered by Brian Webb. Signed by the author. The book reproduces a series of coloured lithographs from the origin…al edition of Submarine Dream, stochastically screened from the original prints and printed on Canaletto paper at the Camberwell Press. The cover design is based on a design by Tirzah Ravilious. At the outbreak of World War II, Eric Ravilious became an official war artist alongside Edward Bawden and John Nash. In the summer of 1940, he documented submarine operations at HMS Dolphin, Hampshire. Over the following months, he produced a series of lithographs from these drawings, originally printed in a small edition at Cowells of Ipswich after his first choice, the Curwen Press, was bombed. Tragically, Ravilious went missing on a flight over Iceland in 1942 and was presumed dead at the age of 39. This edition marks the first time these lithographs have been stochastically reproduced from the original prints, capturing the unique atmosphere of submarine life. A high-quality, beautifully produced, and extremely scarce book. A couple of minor bumps to edges, otherwise fine. Eric Ravilious (illustrator).
