First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Previous owner has written his name and address (Surrey) and dated 19 April, 1919 in pencil to blank FFE. Book smells slightly musty (as do most books that arriving here from the British Isles), but not objectionably so. Original cloth boards were somewhat more colorful; this is likely a re-bind. The first of many novels from William Dunkerley (1852-1941) writing as John Oxenham (the pen name taken from Charles Kingsley's novel "Westward Ho!") His poetry includes "Bees in Amber: a little book of thoughtful verse" (1913), which became a best seller. Dunkerley served as deacon and teacher at the Ealing Congregational Church, west London, from the 1880s. He then moved to Worthing, Sussex, in 1922, where he became the town's mayor. He was a major contributor to Jerome K. Jerome's "The Idler" magazine. In this title, a murderer, "whose soul is God's Prisoner, but whose body is free," summarized The Bookman in 1899, "wanders . . . from end to end of the earth, seeking the peace that can never be found. But, after a time, he does find a measure of relief in doing good and in self-sacrifice -- where real happiness must perhaps always be found." 331 pp. Reduced from $650.
