A beautiful copy of this compilation of Robert Duncan's poetry written over several years as the Structure of Rime poetry series. The book includes six poems published for the first time from Duncan's notebooks, plus one previous published after Duncan's death. Robert Duncan (1919-1988) was "described by Kenneth Rexroth as 'one of the most accomplished, one of the most influential' of the postwar American poets, Robert Duncan was an important part of both the Black Mountain school of poetry, led by Charles Olson, and the San Francisco Renaissance, whose other members included poets Jack Spicer and Robin Blaser. A distinctive voice in American poetry, Duncan's idiosyncratic poetics drew on myth, occultism, religionincluding the theosophical tradition in which he was raisedand innovative writing practices such as projective verse and composition by field." [from The Poetry Foundation] This copy has the illustrations by Frank Lobdell that are inset on the front and back covers of this book, but is missing the extra print signed and numbered by the artist. Lobell, (19212013) was an American painter, often associated with the Bay Area Figurative Movement and Bay Area Abstract Expressionism. Bound in textured red cloth covers with a gray title label to the spine. The inset Lobdell prints, etchings with aquatint, are black and white abstract designs. This eighty-third publication from the press was designed and produced under the direction of Andrew Hoyem. It is printed in Perpetua type, designed by Eric Gill and printed on mouldmade Zerkall Book Laid Paper. Housed in a slipcase with gray paper covers that are framed by the red cloth used on the book.
