But, around the turn of the century, more than a dozen steamship lines carried passengers and freight up and down Long Island Sound, serving Portland, Boston, Fall River, Providence, Bridgeport, and other New England ports. By 1899, nearly all lines were under the monopolisic control of financier J. P. Morgan's New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad, All except one: the Joy Line. Edwin Dunbaugh's fascinating new book is the first study ever made of this small steamboat company and its struggle to remain independent. The Era of the Joy Line is a nostalgic excursion back to a vanished period in American transportation history. Although Dunbaugh examines the corporate background of the Joy Line story, he concentrates on the boats themselves, their personalities and operations (the book is illustrated with more than ninety period photographs). He recounts how the Joy Line began when three Colorado businessmen (including J. Allan Joy) purchased a fleet of small antiquated steamers in 1899. Offering clean but simple accommodations, the joy Line's fares were only half those of the railroad monopoly's more elegant steamers. For six years, despite limited capital, accidents, and breakdowns on its aging boats and despite continual efforts by the monopoly to force it out of business, the joy Line provided transport from New York to New England for a whole class of people who had never before been able to afford it. Failing to drive it out of business, Morgan's New Haven monopoly bought the joy Line in 1905. The old owners continued as managers until the Line's steamship Larchmont went down on a cold February night in 1907 ~the worst disaster in the history of Long Island Sounding. That ended The Era of The Joy Line, but now, thanks to Edwin Dunbaugh, steamship buffs and students of American transportation history can relive the time.
