Regarded as one of the masterpieces of classical Latin literature, the work has inspired poets, artists and translators for centuries. This edition presents John Dryden's acclaimed seventeenth-century verse translation, first published in his monumental 1697 folio of Virgil's works, accompanied by finely reproduced engravings from that original edition. The Georgics of Virgil; Translated into English Verse by Mr. John Dryden. Designed and printed by Richard Ellis for Cheshire House, Publishers, New York, 1931 Numbered Limited edition 272/1200. First edition thus. "The present edition of The Georgics has been reprinted from the First folio Edition of Dryden's Collected Works of Virgil, published by Jacob Tonson, in London: 1697. The twenty engravings are reproduced from the originals in the first folio." A very good copy of this splendid edition of Virgil's works. A folio sized volume bound with tan leather spine with blind stamped titles, and with design to resemble stitching. Boards covered with a decorative brown paper. Binding is sound. Some wear and rubbing to head of spine, and some more significant losses near the tail. Overall the text is lovely and clean and in fine condition. Printed on an ivory stock with rough cut edges to vertical and lower edges. Provenance: First pastedown features a small colourful bookplate with 2 swans drinking from a wine glass above a shield with 3 sickles. This is believed to be the bookplate of the controversial Civil War General and politician Colonel Daniel Edgar Sickles (1819 - 1914). He was a bibliophile, and his extensive collection of books and related materials was auctioned by Parke-Bernet in 1847 and 1950, and items from that collection are known to have carried this bookplate. Clearly from the dates, the book must have been owned by a descendant of his. The plates are beautifully produced. Text in English. xiii + 182pp + (1) limitation page. Weight approximately 1.36kg unpacked. Dimensions: Approximately 362mm high x 140mm wide x 20mm deep.

Volume I contains mainly verses by Alexander Pope: 'particularly' I Windsor Forest, II Essay on Criticism, III Rape of the Lock, IV Ode on St. Cecilia's Day, V Verses to the Memory of a Lady, VI To Mr Jervas, with Fresnoy's Art of Painting, VII T…o a Young Lady, with the Works of Voiture, and VIII Eloisa to Abelard. Volume II, Miscellaneous Poems, Translations and Imitations, contains works by a number of authors with the most significant being Dr. William King, Mr. Elisha Fenton, the Revd. Mr. Broome, the Revd. Mr. James Ward and the Reverend Mr. Archdeacon Danie. Volume II contains an index to the contents of both volumes. Both volumes are bound in contemporary full leather binding with five raised bands to the spine. The title and volume labels on the spine are lost although the volume numbers are blind stamped to the spine. The spines have chipping at the top and bottom and some edge cracking. The corners are bumped with some rubbing. Wale Family bookplate to the front pastedowns and the second volume has another family name, Lady Wale, to the front free endpaper. Browning around the edges of the endpapers. Creasing to the top corners of pages 37 to 62 in the first volume. Two sections of the text protrude a little from the rest of the text block in volume II. There is also some browning to the title pages and the frontispiece in Volume I which is a portrait of Pope and the pages are browned but are otherwise generally unmarked.

Pages characteristically age toned, but notably bright for the period. The odd spot, heavier to first and last few leaves. One or two minor handling marks to fore edge. A very well preserved copy. FIRST EDITION. Although the pagination runs continuously throughout the volume, the 'Short account of the most eminent painters' has its own title-page ( which reads: 'A Short Account Of the most Eminent Painters Both Ancient and Modern, Continu'd down to the Present Times According to the Order of their Succession. London, Printed for W. Rogers at the Sun against St. Dunstans Church in Fleetstreet. 1695.'). Du Fresnoy's Latin poem was originally published shortly after his death in 1668. It was followed by translations into French (1668), English (prose) (1695), German (1699), Italian (1713) and Dutch (1733). Du Fresnoy opens his poem by declaring that 'As poetry shall be like a painting, so should painting be like poetry'. Beauty should be interpreted in different ways - as may be seen in such famous ancient statues as the Antinous, the Hercules, the Venus, the dying Gladiator. Besides Dryden's translation of Du Fresnoy's poem, the present volume includes a translation of the Remarks with which Roger de Piles accompanied his French version of the poem (1668). Dryden's famous preface Parallel of Poetry and Painting stands on its own as one of the author's most respected works. The first appearance of Richard Graham's chronology of eminent artists, both ancient and modern is presented here with its own title-page. While President of the Royal Academy, Sir Joshua Reynolds published extensive notes on Du Fresnoy's Art of Painting (in William Mason's new translation) (1783).
