This is an autobiography of Morris Cohen written jointly with Charles Drage. Cohen, brought up in the Jewish community of London's East End, joined the Shanghai Police after serving in the First World War, and became a.d.c .and bodyguard to the politician Sun Yat-Sen. He identified strongly with Chinese nationalism, spoke Chinese fluently, and rose to become a General in the Kuomintang army. After the communist takeover he was forced to leave China, but retained his links to the country, which he visited again on a couple of occasions, including the November 1966 centenary celebrations for Sun Yat-Sen, whom he had so greatly admired.
