First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Original Vintage Sheridan Douglas Tarot Cards by Mandragora Press, 1972. 78 Cards with original colour printed box and original folding printed leaflet. 22 major Arcana cards and 56 Minor Arcana cards - 78 Cards, complete. Cards are in overall very good vintage condition. There is very slight age toning to the cards throughout the deck. The backs of the cards are a plain printed purple and the corners are rounded. The cards are printed in bold solid colours and the faces of some of the figures, such as the Fool, have an innocent and elflike appearance. The original purple printed flap-ended box has some wear as pictured and is complete with original folding instruction sheet. This original deck is very hard to find. The Mandragora Whitby sticker is still on the reverse of the box. Card Size: 4 5/8" x 2 5/8" Inches. This is a first edition of the Sheridan-Douglas Tarot deck first published in 1972 (as a companion to the book Tarot: Origins, Meaning and Use of the Cards by Alfred Douglas). The 78 Tarot images were created by artist David Sheridan. In the early 80s this deck became unavailable, and its reputation as a legendary pack (to quote the words of the proprietor of a celebrated occult bookshop in central London) grew steadily. Today, demand from collectors is only growing stronger, despite a modern reprint having been published. Stuart R. kaplan, Encyclopedia of Tarot, page 276.
