Paper. Condition: Very Good +. Andy Donato (cover) (illustrator). First Thus. NOTE : *** All names used in the book are fictious tho' the lives are REAL. *** The author lived in Canada at the time of his book, but grew up in Germany, fought during WWII on the Finnish Front as Obergefriter, was taken captive in Poland and eventually sent to Camp 6/10 in Siberia. These 228 pages detail his capture, near-starvation, torture, camp life (incl. labour and leadership accomplishments) and finally going home by train to Frankfurt in March 1949. Toward the end the P.O.W.'s were staging Variety Night presentations. You''ll enjoy reading about the comradeship between Stock, Peter Dombrowski and Spiess Kindermann. Cond : Paper wrapper is grey-brown with both red and black lettering. Cover graphic by Donato shows a German soldier's uniform turned into a scarecrow. (The back cover has a burned out Panzer). The story makes this symbolism VERY clear. Page edges are red. Cover is lightly chipped along top edge, binding is VG but spine has slight lean. No names nor creases. Store stamp verso front cover. BRIGHT with minimal soiling and NO sig. flaws. EXCELLENT reading copy of a hard to find book !! Almost giftable ! Quote (p. 101) : " .buildings in the camp were natural incubators for these parasites. Only three weeks after our arrival, I killed my first hundred lice. The bedbugs did not treat me too badly; perhaps I did not have their blood group. But Peter suffered enormously . .".
