From 1750 to 1814 there was ongoing conflict between the Indians and the whites for possession of territory in the upper Ohio Valley and the Old Northwest. The Indians, who had first supported the French against the English and later the English against the Americans, were not a party to the Treaty of Paris of 1783, which gave the United States title to the Old Northwest. So their conflict with the Americans continued until they were defeated at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794. But in 1793, the Quakers had drafted an appeal to the Indians attempting to preserve the peace and asking the Indians to accept Christianity. The appeal was dated April 19, 1793, at Philadelphia, and included 44 names.

Political parties developed in Indiana during the second quarter of the nineteenth century. After the election of 1824, the followers of Adams and Clay became National Republicans and the followers of Jackson became Democratic Republicans. In 1834, the National Republicans were succeeded by the Whigs, and the Democratic Republicans became known as Democrats. The Whigs were succeeded by the Republicans in 1854. Thus were born the two parties which exist today. This article is about the history of a Clay Club organized in 1843, in Shelby County, Indiana, primarily to support the candidacy of Henry Clay, and includes the minutes for the period 1843-44.

Schreyer and his family had emigrated from Bavaria, settling near Plymouth, Indiana in 1843. This article includes the long letter written by Schreyer to his family in Germany in 1846, and his brother-in-law's much shorter response. Schreyer was a treasure trove of information regarding American customs, business, culture, farming, folkways; a veritable how-to guide to living on a midwest American farm in the early nineteenth century. In addition to being very informative, the letter exhibits the love of liberty and an appreciation of freedom which were felt by so many of the early German immigrants, and, like many similar letters extolling the American way of life, undoubtedly induced many Germans to come to America during this period.
