OVERALL CONDITION: FINE & UNREAD 1902 - The Works of Friedrich Schiller, edited by Nathan Haskell Dole. Each volume is translated from the original German into English by different expert translators. Published in 1902 in Boston, Massachusetts by Francis A. Niccolls & Co. as part of its exquisite Connoisseur Edition of only 150 copies, of which this is 58/150. Collated and complete in 10 volumes. In original 3/4 dark green sumptuous morocco leather binding. Each volume contains 5-6 high-quality photogravures and a hand-colored frontispiece being inserted in front of its corresponding original black and white photogravure. The frontispieces are exceptionally tinted with only a few areas of evidence of human error upon close inspection (see final two pictures). Octavo, 9" x 6." Original and strikingly beautiful Edwardian 3/4 dark green morocco over marbled paper. Three-ribbed spine with gilded compartment floral decoration, bordering and lettering. Top edges gilt, other edges rough cut. Hand-made marbled endpapers. Thick, archival-quality paper used for the leaves. Over 52 photogravures of paintings, each with a captioned tissue guard describing the featured painting. CONDITION: ANTIQUARIAN FINE & UNREAD The spines are square, hinges and joints firm and pages tight. Many sections of the volumes are VERY tightly bound and remarkably appear unopened. Multiple leaves are not fully cut and joined together in these sections. The gilding appears to be completely intact. The spines are gently sun-lightened. The volumes show only light rubbing to extremities from minimal shelf wear over the past 120+ years. The boards are colorful and clean with sumptuous supple leather. The "Aesthetical and Philosophical Essays Volume I" has a light red mark on its fore-edge and Volume II of this work has more rubbing than the other volumes so could be considered NEAR FINE. All of the volumes' interiors are clean with bright, untoned pages with no writing or foxing or even ghosting from the plates (remarkably rare!). Each volume has a decorative former owner bookplate on the front pastedown. There may be the scarce mark or sign of handling in places. An exquisitely bound and spectacular copy in remarkable condition for 120+-year-old volumes in ORIGINAL fine morocco of a RARE set of only 150 with stunning-photogravures and exceptional hand-colored frontispieces. A set that any bibliophile and collector of fine antiquarian sets would be proud to prominently display in his or her collection. More pictures available upon request. The volumes will ship fully insured with signature required upon receipt for your protection. I have bought and sold books and art on eBay for over a decade and have a 100% satisfaction rating.
