Chi arreda non si limita, infatti, a giustapporre elementi in vista di un uso e di una funzione ma, anche se inconsapevolmente, allestisce la scena di possibili interazioni, immagina, propone e prefigura situazioni esistenziali. Avvia una conversazione da cui scaturisce un doppio ordine di messaggi che s'intrecciano e si rafforzano attraverso un gioco di rimandi, di sottolineature il cui senso non sfugge al visitatore. Il soggiorno, in particolare, può essere decodificato e utilizzato da indicatore delle trasformazioni sociali in atto.
