Er ging nach Genf, wo er zehn Jahre als Prof. römisches Recht lehrte und 1587 in den Rat der Zweihundert aufgenommen wurde. Über Straßburg (1591) kam er 1600 nach Heidelberg, wo er die juristische Lehrmethodik reformierte, übernahm 1618 im Auftrag des Pfalzgrafen Friedrich V. eine Gesandtschaft beim französischen König und mußte 1621 vor den Truppen Tillys aus Heidelberg nach Straßburg fliehen. Seine Bedeutung für die Rechtswissenschaft beruht vor allem auf der Herausgabe des Corpus juris civilis (1583), einer Kompilation aller Werke der Justinianischen Gesetzgebung mit eigenem Kommentar, die in zahlreichen Auflagen bis ins 18.Jh. erschien. Jahrhundert in Deutschland als maßgebliche Rechtsquelle galt. Üblich wurde die Bezeichnung "Corpus Juris Civilis" erst durch den französischen Humanisten u. Rechtsgelehrten Denis Godefrey (1549 - 1622), der u.a. in Köln studierte u. später in Heidelberg als Professor lehrte. - Vgl. The first edition dates from 1585.
