This edition appearing shortly after the death of Frederick Bastiat (1801-1850) the pioneer champion of free-market, laissez-faire economics, who ridiculed and rebutted the usefulness of government interventions in the economy (inevitably undertaken to benefit one special interest or another) by the simple expedient of noting the widespread damage such interventions actually caused (a lesson still not grasped in the political capitals of America and most of the world) -- as famously in his satirical essay on the petition of the candle-makers, who urged the government to extinguish the sun, as its cost-free (and thus obviously "unfair") competition was sharply reducing their sales.
