Hardcover. 217 p.; 20.5 cm. [First printed in 1949: Methodist union catalog D1484] `To be sure, man's reason alone will never find certainty nor man's will alone ever discover the place of peace. For there is no such thing as human reason and will standing alone. In the grateful recognition of our dependence upon God and the dedication of our all to Him is the way that leads home. In such a consecrated life the divine image is continually renewed in us by His grace, while His spirit bears witness with our spirits that He is and that we belong to Him. To the pilgrim whose reason and will are alike devoted to the service of God, the witness becomes clearer as the days pass. For "the path of the righteous is as the dawning light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day." The theoretical division of reason from faith produces the barrenness of logical positivism on the one hand and uncritical dogmatism on the other. The practical separation of reason from faith gives rise to a science devoted to the uncontrolled, amoral development of techniques for mass destruction and to a religion of fanatically intense feeling with no means of self-criticism nor of application to the tasks of our common life. Only by the union of reason and faith in the service of God can we hope both to know the Truth and to be free. For God is the ground of our reason, the source of our knowledge and the only hope of our salvation.' (p. 211 f.) VG orig. light green boards in edgeworn maroon dj.
