Cork" to endpaper and half-title. John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester (1 April 1647 (O.S.) 26 July 1680 (O.S.)) was an English poet and courtier of King Charles II's Restoration court, who reacted against the "spiritual authoritarianism" of the Puritan era. Rochester embodied a novel rebellion against the puritan programme, and he became as well known for his rakish lifestyle as for his poetry, although the two were often interlinked. He died as a result of a sexually transmitted infection at the age of 33. Rochester was described by his contemporary Andrew Marvell as "the best English satirist", and he is generally considered to be the most considerable poet and the most learned among the Restoration wits. His poetry was widely censored during the Victorian era, but enjoyed a revival from the 1920s onwards, with reappraisals from noted literary figures such as Graham Greene and Ezra Pound. The critic Vivian de Sola Pinto linked Rochester's libertinism to Hobbesian materialism. During his lifetime Rochester was best known for A Satyr Against Reason and Mankind and it remains among his best-known works today. Rochester's poetic work varies widely in form, genre, and content. He was part of a "mob of gentlemen who wrote with ease", who continued to produce their poetry in manuscripts, rather than in publication. As a consequence, some of Rochester's work deals with topical concerns, such as satires of courtly affairs in libels, to parodies of the styles of his contemporaries, such as Sir Carr Scrope. He is also notable for his impromptus, one of which is a teasing epigram on King Charles II: We have a pretty witty king, Whose word no man relies on. He never said a foolish thing, And never did a wise one. To which Charles supposedly replied, "That's true, for my words are my own, but my actions are those of my ministers". Rochester's poetry displays a range of learning and influences. These included imitations of Malherbe, Ronsard, and Boileau. He also translated or adapted from classical authors such as Petronius, Lucretius, Ovid, Anacreon, Horace, and Seneca. Rochester's writings were at once admired and infamous. A Satyr Against Mankind (1675), one of the few poems he published (in a broadside in 1679), is a scathing denunciation of rationalism and optimism that contrasts human perfidy with animal wisdom. The majority of his poetry was not published under his name until after his death. Because most of his poems circulated only in manuscript form during his lifetime, it is likely that much of his writing did not survive. Burnet claimed that Rochester's conversion experience led him to ask that "all his profane and lewd writings" be burned; it is unclear how much, if any, of Rochester's writing was destroyed. Rochester was also interested in the theatre. In addition to an interest in actresses, he wrote an adaptation of Fletcher's Valentinian (1685), a scene for Sir Robert Howard's The Conquest of China, a prologue to Elkanah Settle's The Empress of Morocco (1673), and epilogues to Sir Francis Fane's Love in the Dark (1675), Charles Davenant's Circe, a Tragedy (1677). The best-known dramatic work attributed to Rochester, Sodom, or the Quintessence of Debauchery, has never been successfully proven to be written by him. Posthumous printings of Sodom, however, gave rise to pros.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). First edition. A very scarce pirated edition of William Cavendish's poem, 'The Charms of Liberty'. With several pieces by Tom Brown, one poem by the Earl of Rochester, one by a 'Mr Burnaby', one by Edward Ward and several anonymous works. This particular copy is cited on the ESTC as No. T506747 with a full stop after 'epigrams' in th title; the caption title words 'charms of liberty' are not in black letter and the last word of the first line of text is 'write,'. This setting differs from those mentioned by Foxon C84 and C83, (ESTC. T30527 and T30528) although does have some identical leaves to T30527. The publisher of this work is not stated, though is cited as being Henry Hills by the ESTC and Foxon. Collated, complete. Foxon states that the other poems to this work are by Edward Ward and Tom Brown. Tom Brown was an English translator and satirical author. Many of Brown's works remained unpublished at his death and therefore the publication date of many is in question. Jonathan Swift spoke highly of Brown's work and many believe that parts of 'Gulliver's Travels' were influenced by Brown. Ned Ward, or Edward Ward, was also a satirical writer. He is best known for 'The London Spy' a periodical about London life and his many scathing political pamphlets attacking the Whigs and defending the Tory position in parliament. Printer's error to leaves A4 and A6 has resulted in the text being at an angle. William Cavendish, 1st Earl of Devonshire, was an English nobleman, politician and courtier. In paper wraps. Externally, rubbed to the wraps with minor chips to the head and tail of spine as well as to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly chipped to edges. Title page is discoloured. Otherwise, pages are generally bright with some age-toning to edges. Occasional, light, scattered spots. Very Good. book.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible Signed
Two letters providing an insight into the relationship between artist and patron in nineteenth-century England. See the the Duke's entry, and Eastlake's, in the Oxford DNB, as well as James Lees-Milne's biography 'The Bachelor Duke' (1991). With regard to the subject of the letters (now at Chatsworth), Eastlake's obituary in the Illustrated London News states: 'A more important effort was a large composition, commissioned by the Duke of Devonshire, the subject of which was derived from Plutarch's story of the Spartan Isadas appearing in a battle armed but undraped, and being in consequence taken for a god; the exhibition of which picture, in 1827, procured the artist's election an Associate of the Academy.' Both items have strips of minor discoloration, otherwise they are in good condition, lightly aged and with postage folds. Both signed 'Devonshire.' Eastlake is not named as the recipient of the first letter, but given the context his identity is apparent. ONE: 7 October 1827; Chatsworth. 2pp, 12mo. On first leaf of bifolium. The letter suggests that Eastlake has been paid twice. Begins: 'Dear Sir / I am surprized & embarrassed by the letter I have today received from you, and I can only account for my bankers conduct by my having employed a secretary at the very busy time of last spring, who may have sent another order for 250£, I having forgot having done so myself. / I have written to Messieurs Snow for an explanation of this & they will give information to Messieurs Harman. / Sir Thomas Lawrence who is here is going to repair a slight injury done to the picture on the journey. I have hung it in a very good though temporary place, & I admire it more every day'. In 1837 the author of 'Modern Chatsworth; or, The Palace of the Peak' reported that the painting had recently been removed from the state drawing room at Chatsworth to the banqueting hall. TWO: 25 July 1852; Brighton. 1p, 4to. Written (for reasons explained in the text) in a very shaky hand. Eastlake would clearly like to retouch his painting, but the Duke is not inclined to let him. Reads: 'Dear Sir Charles / I should be willing to comply with a request of yours, but I do not like to remove Isadas [sic] from the position where he is seen and admired by thousands every year. But a stronger objection is that I never could consent to having the picture retouched or altered. It is valued by me, and accompanied by too many recollections & associations to permit that. Wishing to give you a [sic] immediate answer, I have used my paralytic left hand. / most sincerely yrs / Devonshire.'.
