Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. Chatsworth and the Devonshire Collection are rare survivals. Both represent a rich and diverse history of taste built and accumulated by the patronage and collecting of 14 generations of one family over five centuries. They represent the changing fashion for objects and works of art ranging from ancient Greece to the present day. The collection includes over 3,000 Old Master drawings from the Renaissance and 17th century, incunabula and printed books nearing 40,000 in number, paintings, princely decorative arts and objects of vertu of the highest quality, and contemporary works of art. All of this has survived, and subsequently grown, wholly due to the family's determination to secure Chatsworth and its treasures for the future. This was underpinned in 1981 by the establishment of the Chatsworth House Trust, a registered charity. In recent years, a true renaissance has occurred at Chatsworth with an ambitious project of restoration and conservation. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Gossip columns claimed Charles paid more attention to his gardens than his wife. The Garden at Highgrove takes readers on a tour of Charles`s favorite creation--a maze-like garden surrounding the estate where he has primarily lived for the past 20 years. Various styles thrive within the boundaries of the property: wildflower meadows, formal hedgerows, outdoor rooms, carefully plotted tapestries of Queen of Night tulips. If Diana complained of neglect, Highgrove`s landscape looks like it has been lavishly doted on. In one series of photos, we see the transformation of a large plot, viewed from the house, as it has been completely erased and re-created year to year. Who has time to complete and then entirely redo a garden on a regular basis? A prince, of course. Although the landscape glows with a vibrant, almost artificial green, Charles has long been a committed organic gardener. In the introduction he recalls the period when he came around to the cause of environmentalism. While driving through a declining English countryside in the 1960s and 1970s, "I remember longing to heal the countryside, to bind up its wounds and to reclothe it in its rightful form." The Garden at Highgrove will inspire gardeners, even those who don`t live in palaces, who are looking for images of elegance and can`t afford a staff to keep the hedges perfect. --Emily White" ; Candida Rose Lycett Green was a British author who wrote sixteen books including English Cottages, Goodbye London, The Perfect English House, Over the Hills and Far Away and The Dangerous Edge of Things. Her television documentaries included The Englishwoman and the Horse, and The Front Garden. Unwrecked England, based on a regular column of the same name she wrote for The Oldie since 1992, was published in 2009. ; FINE/FINE. Book.

"Park Top, who raced between 1967 and 1970, was conceivably the best English bred race mare of this century. Her victories included the Ribblesdale Stakes, the Coronation Cup, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and the Hardwicke Stakes, and finished second in the Champion Stakes, the Arc de Triumphe and the Eclipse Stakes, the last two of which she would probably have won but for errors of judgement by her jockey.".
