Prevade From the Editor: 'Riggy', as Stuart Rigold was affectionately known to all of us, died suddenly on 5th July 1980, with in a year of his retirement as Principal Inspector of Ancient Monuments and Public Buildings at the Department of the Environment. This Commemorative volume is not the place for an appreciation of the man and scholar that Stuart was and, in any case, obitury notices have already appeared elsewhere. Apart from anything else, Stuart's death deprivesd his friends and colleages of the opportunity to contribute to the Festschift that he so richly deserved. With this partly in mind, I suggested to the Kent Archaeological Society, on whose Council and Publication Committee Stuart had served for many years, the publication of the present volume of essays dedicated to his memory.
