Art, on the other hand - that is outside the art market - can be seen as a free space in which something genuinely unique emerges. That this construct is a historical exception is revealed by a fresh look at the early modern period: Here, the principle of competition was thought to be decisive for artistic work. What is more, the competitive habitus of imitation, competition and surpassing - imitatio, aemulatio and superatio - was supposed to bring about cultural progress as such. Gebraucht - Gut Gu - Beschädigungen, Verschmutzungen, ungelesenes Mängelexemplar, gestempelt - Mit Glück (1871-1952) wurde der Posten zum ersten Mal mit einem Kunsthistoriker besetzt; bisher war dieser Malern vorbehalten gewesen. Er begann das Erscheinungsbild der alten kaiserlichen Sammlung mit wissenschaftlichem Anspruch zu verändern - durch eine zeitgemäße Neupräsentation der Gemälde und eine planungsvolle Sammlungstätigkeit. Darüber hinaus änderte sich der Bestand durch alte Neuzugänge: Zahlreiche Gemälde aus den Depots wurden durch Restaurierungen und durch Röntgenuntersuchungen neu entdeckt. 1938 emigrierte Glück in die USA, sein maßgeblicher Einfluss auf die weltberühmte Wiener Gemäldegalerie wird hier erstmals umfassend gewürdigt.
