VG in orig. orange wrapper. 112 p.; 21.5 cm. [Revision of: Church of Christ Number Two, 1956] (Number One being the Anti-instrumental music body) `The Christian Standard was still a voice of cooperation among Christian Churches under Russell Errett's early management,in 1901.When E.B. Sanford .encouraged federation of churches as a practice before the National Con- vention of Disciples of Christ in 1902,at Omaha,Nebraska, and J.H.Garrison, editor of The Christian-Evangelist, encouraged it, J.A. Lord, editor of the Christian Standard, began the unrelenting campaign of that paper against such recognition of and cooperation with other Christian bodies. Church of Christ Number Two truly may be identified as the child or creation of this work by the Christian Standard. Fellowship with "the denominations" has continued to be a major issue in the division which was effected somewhat formally in 1955.' (29 f.) -- `Decision to join the Federal Council of Churches in 1908 was the first clear test of the thought of Disciples about their place in the larger kingdom of Christ. .W.E. Garrison at Omaha in 1902 said that such cooperation recognized that the denominations exist, and that there are Christians in them, but not that they represented an ideal or final form of organization for the whole church. This is the principle that hasled Disciples of Christ to work fro mwithin the existing larger Christian community to reform it to New Testament principles. The Independent position, on the other hand, is to stand apart from the existing Christian world and to show by its life and deeds so superior a type of character that all others will join them in unconditional surrender. The difference between the two bodies is clear.' (32 f.). Revised. Binding is Paperbound.
