First Edition
First Edition. Pamphlet 8vo, original printed salmon wrappers 24 pp. Spliting to spine ends, light scuffs and soiling, and a few small dark stains. Inscription on front wrapper with slight marginal toning; else very good or better. This is a scarce first edition of Degrand's proposal to build a railroad from St. Louis to San Francisco. Top of front cover has the inscription "To the Editor of the Journal, with the Respects of the Committee." Degrand presents his plan in an address to interested parties at the United States Hotel in Boston. While his plan never got the national attention that Asa Whitney's plan did, he did provide information on the cost per mile and other economic data. "From St. Louis, in Missouri to San Francisco, the distance is 1600 miles. At $66,666 per mile, fully equipped, the Rail Road will cost $100,000,000." Graff 3365. Cowan p. 513. Railway Economics p.284. Sabin 19303.

First Edition
First edition. Second edition. 8vo. String-tied printed wrappers, 24 pp. P. P. F. Degrand puts forth a convincing proposal for a transcontinental railroad that would travel between St. Louis and San Francisco. He offers comparisons to travel by sea route versus a transcontinental railroad and the amount of dollars realized by traveling by rail. He expresses that the route can be built in five years and the resultant prosperity to all will be tremendous. A convincing proposal and one of the earliest for a transcontinental railroad. Rear cover lightly soiled and tiny chip to top fore-edge of rear cover, else a near fine copy.

Original printed salmon-colored wrappers [dusting, spine and some extremity chipping] with wrapper title [as issued], stitched. 39, [1 blank] pp. Very Good. Degrand, one of the earliest promoters of a transcontinental railroad, argues that a low freight rate "creates great quantities of Goods to be carried, and thereby becomes the most profitable; that great masses of Passengers are created by the Low Fare; and that a Rise of Fare has invariably diminished the Net Income, and a reduction of Fare has invariably increased it." Degrand, a pioneering supply-sider, proves his point with a formidable array of facts and figures. FIRST EDITION. Thomson 2414. AI 40-1945 [5].
