Some edge wear and browning to top and bottom of pale green and orange jacket and spine, spine browned, 1" loss to top spine, corners rubbed, some overall dust and time staining, no price, no inscriptions, internally clean tight and almost square, overall in vg condition for its age. 197pp. An autobiography by political activist Jessica Mitford (1917-86), which describes her aristocratic childhood and the conflicts between her and her sisters Unity and Diana, who were ardent supporters of Nazism. Jessica married her second cousin Esmond Romilly, who was killed in World War II, and then American civil rights lawyer Robert Treuhaft, with whom she joined the Communist Party USA and worked closely in the Civil Rights Congress. Both refused to testify in front of the House Un American Activities Committee. They resigned from the party in 1958. Jessica was a supporter of Communism and eloped with her second cousin, Esmond Romilly, to fight with the Loyalists in the Spanish Civil War. Diana grew up to marry Sir Oswald Mosley, the leader of the British Union of Fascists. Unity befriended Nazi leader Hitler, who praised her as an ideal of Aryan beauty. Spiral_bound. The jolly inscription by Decca runs some eighty words: addressed to one David Pleydell-Bouverie (possibly a distant relation through the "Stanley line"), the book is a present she seems assured he will appreciate because of the subject (Russell) to whom also she is related ("2nd cousin 3 times removed, or thereabouts"). Condition of these early state (lacks pagination, date) proofs: fair-only, dusty, handled and a little torn along its plastic comb spine-fastener.…

Large oblong octavo stapled booklet / pamphlet. 14pp. Illustrated pinkish covers and some attractive drwaings in text by 'Pele' (Phyliis de Lappe- American communist artist who worked on and modeled for Diego Rivera's New Yrork murals 'Man at the Crossroads.' Cover slightly dulled with very minor wear at corners else VG. some slight edge tearing to covers and some corner creasing, otherwise about very good. Written in response to Noblesse Oblige, by her sister Nancy Mitford. The text also gently mocks communist jargon of the time ( L and non L). This was Jessica's first publication 4 years befor 'Hons and Rebels.' . She was known as the 'red sheep' of the wealthy and influential Mitford family.The title alludes to Stephen Potter's satirical series of books that included Lifemanship.…
