Softcover. Condition: Very good. Exhibition held April 1-May 17, 2008. The xhibition was retrospective in scope, tracing the 50-year evolution of Rickey's career as a sculptor from 1950 to 2001. Rickey's dedicated sculpture making did not start until the artist was already in his forties, he is thought of as one of the great sculptors of the last century. Rickey worked tirelessly until the end of his life, his passion for redefining kinetic innovations never ceasing. As an artist, Rickey was always pushing the ideas of movement to the brink, yet he always stayed within his oeuvre. His career spanned five decades and countless transformations, of which almost all are captured in this 50-year survey. The exhibition included one of Rickey's earliest sculptures, SUN AND MOON (1951), where the influence of Alexander Calder is evident. Another historically seminal sculpture is SEDGE THEME SMALL VARIATION I (1961), Rickey's first-ever reverse knife edge bearing sculpture, which not only helped vault the artist onto the international art scene but made possible all the angled-blade sculptures that followed. The exhibition continues by highlighting Rickey's early polychromed works and the minimal works of the 1970s and '80s, as well as the outdoor works that can be seen in museum sculpture gardens around the world.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Minor edge wear to jacket. Else a bright, clean copy. George Rickey's importance to the art world is belied by the lack of literature about one of the world's most accomplished kinetic sculptors. Rickey's fascinating sculptural oeuvre spans a fifty-three-year working period (1949-2002) and is incredibly diverse. This book is concerned exclusively with the early indoor sculptures from the first 25 years of Rickey's output. With over 380 color and black and white photos covering the artist's early innovations, we get an intimate and more complete picture of his artistic diversity than ever before. This book lays a firm foundation to an understanding of Rickey's creative intentions, and carefully categorizes the works into 38 chapters. Many of the works are published here for the first time.
