In this dense, meticulous, and creative scrapbook, there are 75 leaves/150 pages which measures 12" x 14 5/8" x 2 1/2," and weighs almost 12 pounds. It has "June-Dec '73" written on the spine, and was put together by David Mallery, a Quaker, educator, and cinephile, who was a founding trustee of the American Film Institute. He and his family spent the summers in Sugar Hill, N.H. and the school year in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where Mallery was a beloved Teacher for more than forty years. There are 93 Movie Press Stills with brief handwritten reviews, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, lobby cards, and playbills, as well as personal correspondence and 140 family photographs amidst birthday cards and other ephemera. Notably, he kept record of his friendship with Frank Capra. It appears David wrote Capra of his praises and Frank responded kindly. There are three letters written and signed by Frank, one opens:" Many nice things have happened to me lately, but none can compare with an evening spent with the Mallery's." It is signed "Affectionately" from November 12, 1973. Another closes with this remark: "David, I was speechless, overwhelmed. What a great heart you have, my friend. What a great heart." Similarly, a letter from Lucille Warner Capra reads: "[Y]our letter. is the most moving presentation of [Frank's] present work I could imagine." There are also two snapshots of Capra inside. There is also signed correspondence from former Supreme Justice Judge Potter Stewart as well as Eva Le Gallienne, Katharine Cornell, and the former President of Reader's Digest, Walter Hitesmans. As a youth, David Mallery attended the Germantown Friends School and continued his education at Haverford College. Further studies were completed at Middlebury College and Bread Loaf School of English from which he received a Masters. While pursuing higher education, he taught at Germantown Friends School where he remained for several decades. He also taught seminars at the Westtown School. He worked his way up to the program director of the Friends Council of Education of Philadelphia. He is also the author of the 1966 book "The School and the Art of Motion Pictures." Among his papers is a film itinerary for the summer of 1973. He clocked at least one movie per day. In this album beside commercial photos, Mallery wrote quick handwritten reviews. He was a founder of the Chestnut Hill Film Group showing many films which displayed his varied tastes. In reviewing his death notice posted on the National Association of Independent Schools, one will notice that he was an unwavering amiable and gleeful guy. One title remarks: "The Kindest Person I Ever Knew". He was quick to make friends and especially eager to connect over his love of the moving picture. Some of the movie photos include: Wings in the Dark The Trail of the Lonesome Pine The Exile The Maltese Falcon This Gun for Hire Oklahoma! The Harder They Fall The African Queen Sister Kenny To Sir, With Love Wuthering Heights Alfred Hitchcock's Saboteur Spellbound Monte Carlo How to Marry a Millionaire Back Street Tarzan Escapes ZAZA The Prince and the Pauper In the Good Old Summertime Song of the Thin Man Knock on Wood Algiers The Railway Children Stagecoach Rhapsody in Blue The Lady Vanishes An American in Paris "beautiful, charming, and imaginative. superb craftsmanship How Green was My Valley Anna and the King of Siam Fury Swing Time Another short list of actors mentions: Audrey Hepburn Marilyn Monroe Merle Oberan Greta Garbo Bette Davis Katharine Hepburn Sylvia Sidney Charles Boyer Cary Grant Robert Redford Barbara Streisand Humphrey Bogart Veronica Lake Ingrid Bergman From the date written on the spine, one thinks that there must have been several other volumes. Unfortunately, this is the only one I found. It remains in very good condition. Mallery was a beloved man. There is tribute after tribute to his kindness and enthusiasm on many different websites. A wonderful look at old Hollywood from someone devoted to his family and films. â .
