Santa Maria dell'Anima è considerata la «chiesa nazionale tedesca» di Roma sin dall'originaria fondazione trecentesca di un ospizio destinato a ricevere fedeli provenienti da tutto il Sacro Romano Impero. Essi costituivano una comunità polimorfa all'interno della quale interagivano svariati gruppi di persone, spesso organizzati sulla base di criteri geografici o professionali. In fase tardo-medievale i membri di questa platea così eterogenea riuscirono a coagularsi attorno a una religiosità e una lingua comuni, nonché a tradizioni e usanze condivise, dando vita a una dinamica e influente enclave nei pressi dell'antica arena domiziana di Roma. Quando questo processo stava per raggiungere il suo apogeo con la costruzione di una sontuosa chiesa in occasione dell'Anno Santo 1500, la pubblicazione delle tesi protestanti di Martin Lutero, nel 1517, ebbe sulla comunità un effetto deflagrante, generando un intrico di tensioni, conflitti e diffidenze sia con le alte gerarchie della Chiesa Cattolica sia in seno alla comunità stessa.
