Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is set in 16th century Florence at the time of the Italian Renaissance when it was customary for young men to seek a wife from a respected family and have her chosen for them by their father. Ippolito wants to marry his love, but his father has arranged for him to marry someone else. Panurgio, Ippolito's servant, arranges for Ippolito to meet his love in secret, disguised as a Negromante so that he can perform a trick that will delay the arranged wedding. Throughout the book, we see the subthemes of love and trickery portrayed through the actions of the characters. The book offers a glimpse into how these subthemes, common in Renaissance literature, might have manifested in real life. The author beautifully demonstrates how the motivations and feelings driving people then are not unfamiliar to us today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
