A brief Account of th Ancient Kings and Princes of Britain and Wales.; II Remarks upon the Lives of all the Princes of Wales, of the Royal Families of Enland.; III. Remarkable Observations on the most memorable persons an…d Places in Wales.Together with the natural and artificial Rarities and Wonders in the seeral Counties of that Principality." 186 pages plus 6 pages of publisher's ads. 12 mo. full leather. Boards are rubbed and worn at edges, expertly rebacked in matching brown leather, with author and date at heel. llustrated frontispiece, partially, inexpertly, 'colored' in part half-title stained. Text good but unevenly cut, see note at end. Very early signature on title page, seeming to precede the rest in provenance: "T. H. (?) Morgan". Exensive genealogical sketch of family honorifics in ink on rear endpaper, front and back. Small section torn off at head of front endpaper. Specifically for the Meredydd/Meredith family which held multiple positions as the High Sheriff of Radnorshire through the 16th and 17th centuries. This was the 1000 year office of the personal representative of the sovereign, sustained until 1908, when this high office was transferred to the Lord-Lieutenant, and in 1974 was finally combined with other positions, as the High Sheriff of Powys. Armorial bookplate of John Hughes in front and Harmon PUmpelly Read armorial plate in rear, with family connections explained in adjacent ink text. Additional layers of provenance in ink on front end paper, dated through 1895, when the Meredith's came to America. Meredith, or Meredudd in its earliest manifestations, is a very old Welsh forename. The closest English translation would be ?great lord.? Royal princes bore this name in Powys (mid Wales) and in Deheubarth (south Wales) before the Anglo-Norman invasions. First notes on front endpaper "Morgan Meredydd married Elizabeth daughter of David Lloyd of that family who carried the golden balls before King Arthur". Printed under the pseudonym 'Robert Burton', this book was one of the many texts printed and sold by Nathaniel Crouch in the late-seventeenth century. Little is known of Crouch's life but it appears that he was a shrewd businessman, stocking a huge variety of books on various historical subjects which ranged from recent history and biographies to sensationalist literature on witchcraft and supernatural phenomena. Though this type of book was denounced by authors such as Alexander Pope for their populist nature and their use of many different sources, they were reprinted many times throughout the eighteenth century.
