Thurlow Craig spent the 1920's working as a gaucho in South America, and maintained an active interest in horsemanship all his life. "Pony trekking makes a fascinating companion-sport to show-jumping, polo and hunting, for it involves points of horsemanship which, in this country, fell into limbo when mechanised transport ousted the horse from the roads as a means of serious transport. This book is badly needed, for there have been isolated reports of two-year-old ponies pressed into trekking service, of ponies and horses overworked or underfed on the trek, and so on. Emphasis is placed on how best to maintain the best type of saddle, not for the greater comfort of the rider but for the greatest possible comfort to the horse or pony being ridden day after day, mile after mile. Great attention is also given to care and feeding on the trek. The author has studied the art of long-distance horsemanship for thirty-eigh years. Today, riding fourteen and a half stone when fully equipped, he can maintain a hundred and eighty miles a week in the Welsh mountains on a fourteen-hand cob, travelling the old bridle paths and by-lanes.
