Map front endpaper and diagram illustrated rear endpaper. 172 pp. with bibliography. Profusely illustrated with vintage photographic images, reproductions and maps. The first (and only printing). Illustrated history of the Atlantic City Railroad, an historic route that connected New York City and Philadelphia to Atlantic City. In 1889, the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad consolidated all its roads in South Jersey into the ACRR. In the early 20th century, the ACRR set speed records between Camden, New Jersey and Atlantic City, a 55.5 mile trip that it traversed in 43 at an average speed of 77.4 mph. Some of the shorter segments nearer the coast *from Winslow Tower and Meadows Jct, and from Egg Harbor to Brigantine Jct.) were speedier still, with some trains reportedly reaching 115 mph. Some its predecessor lines ran in the 1870s (the Camden, Gloucester & Mt. Ephraim and the Philadelphia & Atlantic City; Williamstown); in 1901 the ACRR acquired several of the coastal short lines (the Cape May, Delaware Bay & Sewell's Point; the Ocean City; the Seacoast). In the 1930s it acquired the Stone Harbor and the Wildwood and Delaware Bay). In June, 1933, the ACRR was officially renamed the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines.
