Hardcover. Condition: Good. Originally published in the 18th century; this edition probably dates from the late 19th or early 20th century. 12mo. 448 pages. Dark green pictorial cloth boards. Monochrome illustrations in the text. Boards rubbed and with a few small spots and marks; darkened on spine; corners bumped; ends of spine crushed and starting to fray; rear joint starting to crack near head. Endpapers toned and foxed; previous owner's name on front free endpaper. Small marks on a few pages but mostly clean. Both hinges starting to crack; gutters starting to crack in places but pages remain firmly bound.

Unclear if all stories have been included. The format is to arrange the stories by "eveninngs" which consist of 1-8 "stories" which take about 11-15 pages of text. The brown cloth hard cover is holding together fairly well still though the head of the spine is quite chipped and the front hinge was exposed following the ffep, we have re-glued. Top of rear board has moisture damage which has stained the last several pages. Gold is still evident on the fore edges. Boards worn though to cardboard at the corners. There is foxing and browning of the pages throughout. Binding is tight. 446pp plus ads.

The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping and rubbing. The spine has a bit of light fading. There is one small spot of discoloration to the front cover. The rear inner hinge has cracked. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked name on the front pastedown page and again on the front endpaper. There is also a previous owner's ink stamped name and address on the reverse of the front endpaper and title page. "Thomas Day (22 June 1748 28 September 1789) was a British author and abolitionist. He was well known for the book The History of Sandford and Merton (17831789) which emphasized Rousseauvian educational ideals. ".

Boards are marked, particularly the spine, and edges, corners and spine ends are bumped and rubbed. Spine is slightly cocked, and page block is tanned, blemished and lightly foxed, as are the pastedowns and endpapers. Hinge breaks at front and rear boards, and previous owner's nameplate on front pastedown. Pages remain tightly bound and are clear and bright througout. LW. Used.
