Laminated illustrated wrappers, 4to, 28 cm, viii, 72 pp, ills (some colour). From the introduction: "The British Embassy to France was the first to be established in its own house by the British Government. The house remains the finest of all British embassy residences and one of the most interesting in Paris. It has associations with many famous figures from French and British history, including Napoleon Bonaparte, whose sister Pauline owned the house, and the first Duke of Wellington, who persuaded his Government to purchase it.Having arrived in Paris on 4 May 1814, a month after the abdication of the Emperor Napoleon, knowing of his own impending appointment as ambassador to the King of France, the newly created Duke of Wellington looked for a suitable house in which to take up residence.[The purchase price] was paid in instalments, the last being settled a year after Waterloo, at the end of August 1816. Nearly two centuries later the house still retains the greater part of those contents including chandeliers, clocks, candelabra, as well as furniture. However the house came without pictures, because Pauline Borghese had relied on loans from the Roman collection of her much-exploited husband, Prince Camillo Borghese. The pictures and pieces of sculpture now displayed in the house are lent from, or through the agency of, the Government Art Collection. The majority are portraits, many of considerable historical interest within their present context." Near Fine.
