Hardcover, in dust jacket. Illustrations by Stephen Cook (illustrator). First edition, first printing. Also known as Seaman, Scannon was the little-known member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and the only animal to survive the full three years of the trip. His story is creatively told by authors Adrien Stoutenburg and Laura Nelson Baker, a duo that not only lived together but also co-authored many books. Stoutenburg is best known for her poetry, with her second collection A Short History of the Fur Trade being considered for the Pulitzer. Briefly inscribed and signed by both Stoutenburg and Baker on half-title verso. Light rubbing edges, faint spine toning, overall near fine copy in gently toned and rubbed, near fine dust jacket with small puncture front panel affecting board, in mylar cover.
