In the early nineteenth century, the gifted stratigrapher and amateur geologist William Phillips (1773-1828) gave several lectures to interested young people in Tottenham on the subject of geology. These lectures were later collected into a book, which Phillips expanded in later versions. This reached its peak in 1822 when the clergyman William Daniel Conybeare (1787-1857) collaborated with Phillips to produce this rigorous and improved assessment of the geological composition of England and Wales. Although no second volume was ever published, the book had a tremendous impact on geologists throughout the United Kingdom and Europe, inspiring foreign scholars to produce equivalent volumes about their own countries. Conybeare's concern for the stratigraphy of fossils is especially remarkable for the time. William Fitton, later president of the Geological Society of London, praised the book highly, remarking that 'no equal portion of the earth's surface has ever been more ably illustrated'.

It traces the historical development of this field of science and explains some of the more important geological processes that have shaped our planet over time. The author discusses the chemical composition of various geological formations and examines how they have been arranged into strata. The book also examines the fossil record to gain insight into the history of life on Earth and discusses the significance of trap rock and volcanic activity. Concepts such as the change of the Earth's levels, the origin of valleys, and the presence of glacial gravel deposits are also explored. The book concludes by examining the geological history of England and discussing a range of topics, including the history of coal mining and the processes involved in the working of other mines. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. CONYBEARE, W.D. (1787-1857) and WILLIAM PHILLIPS (1775-1828). Outlines of the geology of England and Wales, with an introductory compendium of the general principles of that science, and comparative views of the structure of foreign countries. Part I. (all published). London: W. Phillips, G. Yard, 1822. FIRST EDITION. 8 vo. Contemp. calf, rebacked, with contrasting spine labels. (8), lxi, (1, blank), (2, half-title misbound here), (3), 3-57, (1), (2, inserted leaf), (1), 60-470 pp. Folding hand-colored engraved geological map of England & Wales as frontispiece + multi-folding hand-colored engraved linen-backed plate of geological sections + folding letterpress table + a few woodcuts in the text. A very good copy. "Conybeare was one of the most active early members of the 'Oxford school' of geology and was a close associate of William Buckland. He was one of the most able British exponents of the synthesis of progressionism and catastrophism, which dominated geology in the 1820's and 1830's. His most important single work was his great enlargement and improvement of William Phillips' compilation of English stratigraphy. This created a synopsis of stratigraphical knowledge that was at the time unrivaled in detail and accuracy. In the general introduction to the 'Outlines', Conybeare considered the range of 'actual causes' but regarded them as inadequate to explain such phenomena as the 'diluvium' (glacial drift) and the form of valleys; for these he proposed diluvial explanations, although without stressing any concordance with the scriptural flood. The 'Outlines' described British stratigraphy back to the Carboniferous and was termed 'Part I'; Adam Sedgwick was to have assisted Conybeare with a second volume on the earlier strata, but it was never published." (D.S.B.). Geike, p.16. Challinor, 'Hist. Brit. geol.', pp.87-88. Zittel, pp.426-427. Geology Emerging 506.

William Daniel Conybeare, 1787-1857. Clergyman, geologist and palaeontologist, Conybeare was one of the early members of the Geological Society. 'Outlines of Geology' is considered his principle work and is an enlargement of an earlier, far slimmer, edition by William Phillips. It mostly concerns the Carboniferous or later strata and had a significant influence on British geology. Although referred to as Part I, it was never followed by any other published parts. Note an extra leaf has been inserted between pages 58 and 59 (N) containing the second half of the contents page for Book 2. Although the printing differs slightly, there is no reason to believe it is not contemporary.
