Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Maurice OConnor Drury was among Wittgensteins first students after his return to Cambridge in 1929. The subsequent course of Drurys life and thought was to be enormously influenced by his teacher. The Selected Writings of Maurice OConnor Drury brings together the best of his lectures, conversations, and letters on philosophy, religion and medicine.Central to the collection is the Danger of Words, the 1973 text described by Ray Monk as 'the most truly Wittgensteinian book published by any of Wittgenstein's students'. Through notes on conversations with Wittgenstein, letters to a student of philosophy and correspondence of almost 30 years with Rush Rhees, Drury gives shape to what he had learned from Wittgenstein. Whether discussing philosophy, Simone Weil or the power of hypnosis, he makes fascinating excursions into the bearing of Wittgensteins thought on philosophy and the practice of medicine and psychiatry.Alongside a foreword by Monk and an introduction presenting a new biography of Drury, analysing the relationship between him and Wittgenstein, this collection features previously unpublished archival sources. Beautifully written and carefully selected, each piece reveals the impact of Wittgensteins teachings, shedding light on the friendship and thinking of one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

First Edition
Red Hardback. Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Plus. First Edition. 1973. First edition. xvi, 141pp. Maurice O'Connor Drury (1907-1976) was an Irish psychiatrist, best known for his accounts of his conversations, and close friendship, with the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. He lectured medical students on psychology in Trinity College and the Royal College of Surgeons. The Danger of Words is his only book, and has been described by Ray Monk as "in its attitudes and concerns, more truly Wittgensteinian" than almost any other book published by one of Wittgenstein's students. Drury brought Wittgenstein's "critique of language" to bear on the practice of medicine, and particularly psychology that promised the same control over the mind that physics achieved with matter. This promise, pointed out Drury, was one where the delivery date was always being pushed into the future. The book is bound in the original red boards with black titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the bottom of the spine and the contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear with light soiling and the spine is slightly faded. The spine ends are lightly bumped with a nick at the bottom of the spine and there is a tear of about 1/8" on the top rear edge.
